Self-assessment: deadline for paper tax returns.... 31 October 2017

Filing your first self-assessment tax return can seem like an intimidating prospect.

Although the growth of the government’s online filing system has gone a long way to simplify the process, the complexity of tax returns can present problems for first timers.

With the deadline for submitting paper returns rapidly approaching, we thought we would compile a list of questions we frequently hear from our clients about self-assessment deadlines.

When is the deadline for paper self-assessment tax returns?

The deadline for filing paper returns is midnight on the 31 October 2017.

No penalties will be charged for missing this deadline. Instead, you will need to file an electronic self-assessment return which can be found on the government’s website.

I’ve chosen to file my self-assessment tax return electronically. When is the deadline for online returns?

The deadline for online tax returns is 31 January 2018.

Opting for electronic submission is therefore advantageous because you have an extra 3 months to get your accounts in order and submit your return to HMRC.

Missing this deadline by up to 3 months will land you with a £100 penalty.

Can I submit my online self-assessment tax return before the October deadline?

You can submit your electronic tax return as early as you like.

Some people choose to wait until the new year to file their returns but we recommend you get it done as early as possible as it will limit the likelihood of missing the deadline or filing an inaccurate return.

I’m submitting a paper self-assessment tax return. Do I need to pay my taxes by 31 October?

No. The final deadline for paying your taxes is 31 January 2018.

Payments can be made in several ways. The easiest way to pay is by debit or credit card on the government’s website.

Additional interest will be charged if you miss the payment deadline and you may face a penalty charge.
